Regarding 'The verse says ... also cannot sever': all uncontaminated concentrations can sever defilements. Even the fundamentally pure lacks the capacity, how much less could defiled ones sever! This illustrates the inferior by means of the superior. That is to say, fundamentally pure concentration cannot sever lower stages, because defilement has already been abandoned; it cannot sever defilements of its own stage, because it is bound by defilements of its own stage; it cannot sever higher stages, because they surpass itself. Pure threshold states can also sever defilements, because all can sever the stage immediately below. Furthermore, fascicle 162 of the *Vibhāṣā* says: 'Question: Why can contaminated paths not sever their own stage and higher stages, while uncontaminated paths can sever them? Answer: Because the uncontaminated path is an unbound dharma, and is nothing other than superior to contaminated dharmas; therefore, it can sever them. Furthermore, the contaminated path adopts six aspects, loathing lower stages and longing for its own stage, hence it severs only the lower. The uncontaminated path adopts sixteen aspects, turning away from all stages, hence it can sever universally. Question: The contaminated path also adopts sixteen aspects; why can it not sever universally? Answer: Although it trains in producing the aspects of the noble path, because it is not distinct, it does not sever defilements, just as a lion cub is not yet able to kill beasts.' Pure [concentrations] subsumed under intermediate [dhyāna] also cannot sever, just as explained for the fundamental.
