"From 'Only humans of the three continents' up to 'the repeated samādhis'" explains the person and the time [of liberation]. The *Xianzong lun* states: "Only humans of the three continents can generate this concentration, belonging equally to both men and women, because based on a female body one can also master extending or shortening life. It is only in the stage of an aśaikṣa, because those in training (śaikṣa) merely delight in the noble path and cannot yet feel revulsion toward it. This also is not all [aśaikṣas], but only those liberated at any time (akāla-vimukta), because those liberated periodically (kāla-vimukta) are fond of the noble path." Furthermore, the *Mahāvibhāṣā*, fascicle 105, states: "Answer: Noble ones can generate it, not ordinary worldlings; aśaikṣas can generate it, not those in training; those liberated at any time generate it, not those liberated periodically. Why is that? Only if one has attained mastery over concentration and has a body free from defilements can one generate this samādhi. All ordinary worldlings and those resolved through faith lack both factors. Although those who have attained through view have attained mastery over concentration, their bodies still have defilements. Although those liberated periodically have no defilements in their bodies, they have not attained mastery over concentration. Therefore none of these can generate this concentration. Only those liberated at any time, possessing both factors, can generate this concentration (the above is the śāstra text)."
