"From 'Based on eleven grounds' up to 'the intermediate [dhyāna]'" explains the subsequent line. The *Xianzong lun* states: "It is based on eleven grounds, excluding the upper seven peripheral ones, because the upper seven peripheral ones lack superior virtues. If in the desire realm, it arises after the noble path subsumed under the unarrived [dhyāna]. If in the peak of existence (bhavāgra), it arises after the noble path subsumed under [the sphere of] nothingness. In the remaining cases, it arises after the noble path of its own ground. Stated generically, it arises immediately after the four knowledges: dharma-knowledge, subsequent knowledge, knowledge of suffering, and knowledge of cessation. Stated specifically, what is subsumed under the desire realm does not arise after subsequent knowledge; what is subsumed under the higher realms does not arise after dharma-knowledge; the first two do not arise after [the knowledge of] cessation; the third does not arise after [the knowledge of] suffering; because this concentration arises after other aspects. Those who should attain this all attain it through dispassion at the time of the knowledge of exhaustion (kṣaya-jñāna); later, through preparation, it is brought to active manifestation. Only our World-Honoured One brings it to active manifestation without preparation, progressing toward liberation. When even toward the path he feels revulsion, how could he delight in the states of existence? After this, the noble path also arises into active manifestation; yet because of revulsion toward the path, it does not arise immediately. What is subsumed under the desire realm is produced by reflection (cintāmayī); the rest are produced by cultivation (bhāvanāmayī), because they arise based on concentration (the above is the śāstra text)."
