Regarding 'Among these as explained... not the formless states': below, this is the second section, specifically explaining the eight attainments. Within this, there are: first, specifically explaining the dhyāna; second, explaining the three attainments. Within the first, specifically explaining the dhyāna: first, explaining the dhyāna factors; second, explaining the intrinsic nature of the dhyāna factors; third, explaining defiled states lacking factors; fourth, explaining the name immovable; fifth, explaining differences in feeling upon rebirth; sixth, explaining the arising of lower minds. This is the first, explaining the dhyāna factors, hence the thesis is presented first. Among the eight attainments explained in this manner, the dhyānas subsume factors because calming and insight are balanced; this is not so for the formless states, where calming is predominant and insight is deficient. For this reason, the threshold and intermediate absorptions do not establish factors either, because insight is predominant and calming is deficient.
