[On the lemma]: "Moreover, it is commonly understood in the world … fire exists dependent on fuel."
The Vātsīputrīya answers again: Moreover, it is commonly understood in the world that whatever is unignited and to be burned is named fuel that is burned; whatever is luminous, extremely hot, and blazing is named fire that burns. This burner burns the continuum of that object, causing its subsequent colors to transform and its substance to become subtle, differing from the preceding ones. Although this fire and that fuel both have the eight entities—the four great elements along with form, smell, taste, and touch—as their substance, yet with the preceding fuel as condition, the subsequent fire is then able to arise. Just as with the preceding milk as condition, the subsequent curd arises, or with the preceding wine as condition, subsequent vinegar arises; although milk, wine, curd, and vinegar all consist of the eight entities, nevertheless with milk or wine as condition, curd or vinegar arises. Because of this principle, the world commonly says that fire exists dependent on fuel.
