Regarding "The sūtra states that clinging to a self ... cannot be purified": the author of the treatise cites a thirteenth sūtra to show that the self does not exist. The sūtra states: clinging to a self has five kinds of faults: first, giving rise to the view of a self; second, the view of a sentient being; third, falling into the destiny of bad views; fourth, being identical with the non-Buddhists; fifth, departing from the path. Failing to enter into emptiness in mind explains giving rise to the view of a self. Inability to have pure faith explains the view of a sentient being. Inability to abide explains falling into the destiny of bad views. Inability to attain liberation explains being identical with the non-Buddhists. The noble Dharma being unable to be purified in him explains departing from the path. Another explanation is: as for the five faults: first, giving rise to the view of a self and the view of a sentient being and falling into bad destinies; second, being identical with the non-Buddhists who cling to a self; third, departing from the correct path; fourth, failing to enter into emptiness in mind, being unable to have pure faith in the Three Jewels, being unable to abide in the Four Noble Truths, and failing to attain liberation and nirvāṇa; fifth, the noble Dharma, within the person who clings to a self, cannot become purified because it is covered and obstructed by defilements.
