"This sūtra is meant to show... like a heap, like a stream": the author of the treatise resolves the objection. This sūtra is meant to show that, within a single continuous body capable of remembering past lives, a self is nominally designated as having various states. If one held that a real self in past lives could possess form and so on, how would this not fall into the fault of giving rise to the view of personal identity (satkāyadṛṣṭi)? Yet the Āryas' knowledge of the past is not the view of personal identity—hence this interrogation. Or else, you would have to deny that this sūtra exists. Therefore, this sūtra, relying on the continuity of the five skandhas as a whole, speaks of a nominal self having form and so on. "Like a heap" refers to the nominal designation born of conditions; "like a stream" refers to the nominal designation born of continuity. Having no separate substance, its name is established nominally.
