"The treatise says... adding to the preceding, they make eight": this explains the first line. There are eight bases of mastery. First, having perception of form and craving with respect to internal physical form, to counter that, one contemplates external small forms, regarding them as blue-black, etc. Second, having perception of form and craving with respect to internal physical form, to counter that, one contemplates external extensive forms, regarding them as blue-black, etc. Third, having no perception of form or craving with respect to internal physical form, but merely for the sake of firmness, one contemplates external small forms, regarding them as blue-black, etc., causing craving not to arise. Fourth, having no perception of form or craving with respect to internal physical form, but merely for the sake of firmness, one contemplates external extensive forms, regarding them as blue-black, etc., causing craving not to arise. Furthermore, having no perception of form or craving with respect to the internal body, but merely to inspire the mind or test the afflictions, one contemplates external blue, yellow, red, and white forms, causing craving not to arise. These four, added to the previous ones, altogether make eight kinds.
