"The previous cultivation of deliverance... delusions ultimately do not arise": this is the answer. The earlier cultivation of deliverance is only able to turn away from that craving so that it does not arise, but cannot master the object. The later cultivation of the bases of mastery can master the cognitive object: in accordance with whatever contemplation is desired, delusions ultimately do not arise. Because they can subdue the object, and the mind masters the domain of the object, they are called 'bases of mastery' (abhibhv-āyatana). Or, because they master afflictions, they are called bases of mastery. Or, this wholesome root is itself called a 'base' (āyatana), and because the base can master, the name 'base of mastery' is established. The analysis of these eight bases of mastery through various doors is explained in detail as in the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 85.
