Explanation: The spheres of mastery are of eight kinds: 1. Having the concept of internal form, contemplating few external forms. 2. Having the concept of internal form, contemplating many external forms. 3. Without the concept of internal form, contemplating few external forms. 4. Without the concept of internal form, contemplating many external forms. Without the concept of internal form, contemplating external blue, yellow, red, and white constitute four spheres of mastery, which added to the previous ones make eight. Among the eight, the first two are like the first liberation, the next two are like the second liberation, and the last four are like the third liberation. Cultivating the earlier liberations can only turn away from the mind of attachment, but cannot master the object; cultivating the subsequent spheres of mastery enables one to master the object, so that whatever one wishes to contemplate, defilements will never arise, enabling one to subdue the object. Because the mind surpasses the sphere of the object, they are called spheres of mastery.
