"The Self-Awakened One has already returned to supreme quiescence; / Most of those who uphold his teachings have perished in succession": below this is the second part, re-explaining the lamentation. Within it, first it re-explains the virtuous, and second it re-explains the arising of faults. Here it first re-explains the virtuous. Awakening by oneself without a teacher is called "Self-Awakened," distinguishing him from the two vehicles. One who possesses this awakening is called the Great Master; having now already returned to the most supreme quiescence of eternally joyful nirvāṇa, this explains the earlier "the eye of the world has long been closed." As for "those who uphold his teachings," most of the great śrāvakas, Śāriputra and the rest, have perished in succession, which explains the earlier "most of those worthy of witnessing have dispersed and perished."
