"How does a bhikṣu... fruition of maturation of wealth": having explained the meaning of prolonging life-span, he incidentally clarifies curtailing life-span. According to the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 126, there are five accounts. Thus that treatise says: "Question: In principle, no maturation-fruition of life-span can turn into a maturation-fruition of wealth; why then is it said that karma of life-span maturation is transformed to incur a fruition of maturation of wealth? Answer: There is no transformation of the entity of the fruition; there is the power of transforming karma. That is, by the power of giving and boundary concentration, life-span karma is transformed to incur the fruition of maturation of wealth. Although both could be transformed, at the present time he does not wish for the fruition of life-span, because he prays for the fruition of wealth. Other teachers say: There is karma that previously incurred the fruition of maturation of wealth, but there were calamity-obstructions; by the power of the present giving and boundary concentration, those calamity-obstructions are eliminated and the maturation of wealth arises. Although both could be transformed, at the present time he does not wish for the fruition of life-span, because he prays for the fruition of wealth. Some say: There is karma that previously incurred the fruition of maturation of wealth, yet it was not definite; by the power of the present giving and boundary concentration, the karma incurring wealth is caused to definitely give its fruit. Still others say: There is karma that previously incurred the fruition of maturation of wealth, coarse rather than exquisite; by the power of the present giving and boundary concentration, the coarse-incurring karma is caused to transform into incurring an exquisite fruition. That is, it previously projected a coarse fruition of long duration; now, through the power of giving, concentration, and prayerful aspiration, it is caused to transform into incurring an exquisite fruition of curtailed duration. There are also those who wish that, through giving and concentration, one draws forth the remaining maturation of wealth from past lives. That is, an arhat has remaining maturation of wealth in other lifetimes; by the power of the present giving and boundary concentration, it is caused to be drawn forth into the present. The power of concentration is inconceivable, causing what had long been severed to be renewed." (The Kośa agrees with the first account).
