Regarding the passage from "The commentary says:" up to "its direct opponent dharmas": "Qualities" refers to morality, concentration, and so on; "the possessors of qualities" refers to teachers, preceptors, and so forth. The four phrases, beginning with "lack of respect", collectively indicate an absence of esteem. One lacks respect and esteem toward those former two objects; or, toward the qualities one lacks respect, and toward the possessors of qualities one lacks esteem; or, toward the possessors of qualities one lacks respect, and toward the qualities one lacks esteem. Toward those former two objects one lacks apprehension and deference; or, toward the qualities one lacks apprehension, and toward the possessors of qualities one lacks deference. This is called lack of shame (ahrīkyatā), which is the direct opponent dharma of respect and shame, having respect and shame as its [opposing] nature.
