"If they had distinct intrinsic substances and classes ... what are their distinct characteristics?": Here the author of the śāstra objects again. If among mental factors there were two distinct intrinsic substances and classes—coarse and fine—by which to differentiate vitarka and vicāra, in principle there would indeed be no contradiction. But since there are no two distinct intrinsic substances and classes of coarse and fine, it turns out to be contrary to reason. "Superior" is called coarse, and "inferior" is called fine; the subsequent text should be understood in accordance with this explanation. For within the same class of mental substance, there is no possibility that the coarse and the fine arise simultaneously. Another explanation: within mind and mental factors of the same nature, substance, and class, there is no possibility that fine and coarse arise simultaneously. If you, the Vaibhāṣikas, say that vitarka and vicāra also have a difference in substance and class, you should state what the distinct characteristics of their substances and classes are.
