「非由上下至一心相應」者，論主復難。非由麁、細能顯尋、伺別相，心、心所法一一類中，據相待對皆有麁、細。既無別相以簡尋、伺，由是應知尋、伺二法定不可執一心相應。

"It is not by being superior and inferior ... are associated in a single mind": The author of the śāstra objects again. It is not by coarseness and fineness that the distinct characteristics of vitarka and vicāra can be manifested; within every single class of mind and mental factors, according to relative comparison, both coarseness and fineness are present. Since there are no distinct characteristics to distinguish vitarka from vicāra, one should know from this that one certainly cannot maintain that the two factors, vitarka and vicāra, are associated in a single mind.
