"The verse says: [up to] is abandoned upon acquiring the phenomenon or changing stages" is the explanation. The first line of the verse is the gate of the three moral natures; the second line is the gate of the three periods of time; the third line is the gate of binding to the realms; and the final line clarifies the gate of abandonment. In the present text, the differences in non-acquisition are explained in terms of the phenomena that are not acquired. If we follow [the explanation of] acquisition, there should also be distinctions into the three types of trainees (śaikṣa, aśaikṣa, naivaśaikṣanāśaikṣa) and the three kinds of abandonment. Because the first line states that non-acquisition is pure and indeterminate, we clearly know that it is solely neither-under-training nor beyond-training. That it is abandoned solely by cultivation can be known by parity of reasoning, and is therefore not stated separately.
