"The treatise says: [up to] is subsumed under indeterminate nature" is the gate of distinction among the three moral natures. All non-acquisitions are unveiled-indeterminate, because all non-acquisitions conform to the indeterminate nature of their basis, the life-faculty and the genus-counterpart. Therefore, *Mahāvibhāṣā* 158 says: "Question: Following what kind of difference in nature does non-acquisition differentiate? Answer: It definitely does not follow the phenomenon that is not acquired, because they are mutually incompatible. Nor does it follow the path, because it is not sought by the path. It operates solely dependent on the life-faculty and the genus-counterpart; hence it follows the difference in the nature of its basis. Question: If non-acquisitions and the acquisition of non-analytical cessation both follow differences in the nature of their basis, and the basis is either fruition or solely outflow, which difference in nature do these two follow? Answer: They follow the nature of outflow, because the meaning is universal. Fruition is not universal, so they are not established following it. Question: If non-acquisition were to follow differences in the nature of the phenomenon that is not acquired, what fault would there be? Answer: One who has severed the roots of wholesome [roots] would possess the wholesome; one who has departed from desire would possess the unwholesome; all those beyond training would possess defilement; ordinary worldlings would possess the anāsrava phenomena of the three vehicles; one who has fallen from a fruit would possess the fruit; one who has abandoned a path-approach would possess the path-approach; and the non-acquisition of the two cessations would be asaṃskṛta. Due to such faults, non-acquisition cannot have differences according to the nature of what is not acquired."
