"Concentration (samādhi) means one-pointedness of mind": the power of concentration is able to make the sovereign mind operate on a single object. If there were no concentration, the nature of the mind would be restless and unable to abide in the object. One speaks of the mind because it is predominant; in principle, it also causes all mental factors to operate on a single object. Therefore, the Nyāyānusāra states: "The cause that makes the mind take the intentional object without distraction and without scattering is called samādhi." As for the word samādhi, here it is translated as 'equipoised retention' (dengchi). That is, equally holding the mind and mental factors, making them focus on a single object so that something is accomplished. Therefore, the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 141, states: "Question: What is called equipoised retention? Answer: Holding the mind in equipoise, making it focus on a single object so that something is accomplished, is therefore called equipoised retention."
