Regarding "Equanimity of the mind ... is called equanimity (upekṣā)": Causing the equanimity of the mind—speaking of the mind based on its predominance, it also causes [equanimity of] mental factors. Alternatively, it is the equanimity of the mind, its state of non-alertness; like the cord holding a balance scale, it is opposed to restlessness (auddhatya), and is called equanimity. Therefore the *Abhidharmāvatāra* states: "Equanimity of the mind is called equanimity. Because it discards and turns away from what is unreasonable and faces toward what is reasonable, through this power, it causes the mind to abide in equanimity toward the reasonable and the unreasonable, neither facing toward nor turning away from them, like the cord holding a balance scale." Furthermore, the *Nyāyānusāra* states: "Equanimity of the mind is called equanimity; it is opposed to restlessness. Induced in accordance with principle, it causes the mind not to transgress; this is the meaning of equanimity."
