The Treatise states: "Equanimity of mind [...] is called equanimity (upekṣā)." The Nyāyānusāra states: "Equanimity of mind is called upekṣā. Being contrary to restlessness (auddhatya), and induced by proper manner, it causes the mind not to overstep; this is the meaning of equanimity." The Commentary explains: 'Equanimity of mind' points to its intrinsic nature. Counteracting the non-equanimity of depression and restlessness, it is therefore called equanimity. 'Being contrary to restlessness' presents what it counteracts. Restlessness has coarse and active conduct, strongly opposing the meaning of equanimity, which is why it is specifically mentioned. 'Induced by proper manner' and so forth explains the meaning of equanimity: equanimity is wholesome by nature, induced and produced by a mind acting in proper manner, capable of subduing the mind so that it does not exceed what is to be done. In this treatise, 'having no alerting nature' means having no restlessness.
