"The Jñānaprasthāna-śāstra states… what is the meaning of that statement?" cites the text of the Jñānaprasthāna to interrogate the intended meaning of its statement. Question: As in the case of 'neither can be harmed' below, many types are mentioned in the Desire Realm; their meaning of enduring once arisen is the same as that, so why are only the non-conceptual attainment and the cessation attainment mentioned? The explanation is: these two attainments entirely subsume the mindless state, which is why they are specifically mentioned; the others each possess some portion of mind, which is why they are not mentioned. Another explanation: these two attainments do not impair life; therefore they are specifically mentioned. For example, if a person destined to receive a lifespan of one hundred years enters those two attainments at age fifty, even if a thousand years pass before emerging from the attainment, without eating solid food, he will still receive the remaining fifty years of lifespan. Others impair life, and therefore are not specifically mentioned. Question: As for the lifespan lasting for a long time when entering these two attainments, the result of what karma is it? The explanation is: by analogy with the previous prolongation of life, it is either the visible result of the wholesome volition of the Desire Realm in the remote preparation prior to entering the attainment, or the result of residual karma, or the result of indeterminate karma. Another explanation: through the power of concentration, past karma is aided, causing it to project a prolonged life. However, one should further check the texts. Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle one hundred and fifty-one, says: "Question: In the Desire Realm, when not entering the two mindless attainments, there are also cases of not shifting in accordance with conditions; why are they not mentioned? Answer: What should have been stated but was not stated—you should know that this meaning has something remaining. Some say: What is spoken of here as definitive is that if one abides in the two mindless attainments, the formations of life definitively do not shift in accordance with conditions, whereas others may shift in accordance with conditions, which is why they are not mentioned. Some say: Although in the Desire Realm there are yet others that do not shift in accordance with conditions, in order to display the mighty power of the two attainments, they are mentioned exclusively."
