On "Speakers... distinct, real words": this is the Sautrāntika's explanation. From the beginning of the eon onward, speakers have collectively established sounds as conventional measures of denotation for various meanings. For instance, in ancient times the wise collectively established the single sound go as a conventional measure of denotation for nine meanings. This is cited as proof. The nine meanings are: first, direction; second, animal; third, earth; fourth, light; fifth, speech; sixth, vajra jewel; seventh, eye; eighth, heaven; ninth, water. This universally accepted conventional measure of denotation is not held by me alone; those Vaibhāṣikas who maintain that there are real words capable of revealing meaning must also certainly accept that the words for these meanings were collectively established as conventional measures of denotation. Another explanation: The name go for these nine meanings is otherwise explained as before.
