On "However, the World-Honoured One said... and the sequence of mental moments": the Sautrāntika harmonises and explains the sūtra text. The sūtra states that verses depend on words and the composer of verses, but does not say they depend on sounds. This is because, regarding various meanings, ancient sages collectively established designations on those sounds that can denote those meanings; sounds are simply words. Because words are nominally established upon sounds, words have sound as their essence; the differentiated arrangement of these words constitutes a verse. For this reason, verses are said to depend on words, not that words have a separate entity. These verses are merely differentiated arrangements of words; holding verses to be substantially existent is not correct logic. Just as many trees form a row, yet apart from trees there is no row; or as there is a sequence of multiple mental moments, yet apart from minds there is no sequence. This verse is also like this: apart from words, it has no separate entity.
