"The preceding attainment devoid of ideation [...] the sphere of neither-ideation-nor-non-ideation (naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatana)": their supporting grounds differ. Furthermore, the *Vibhāṣā*, fascicle 152, states: "Question: Why does this attainment not exist in the lower stages?" One explanation says: Furthermore, the attainment of cessation is acquired because it ceases extremely subtle mental and mental-factor dharmas. The lower stages are not conducive to the cessation of extremely subtle mental and mental-factor dharmas. Another explanation says: Furthermore, the lower stages are all termed 'possessing ideation,' and their modes of activity (ākāra) are coarse and agitated, hard to pacify. This stage is named the sphere of neither-ideation-nor-non-ideation; its modes of activity are subtle and fine, easy to pacify. Therefore, there is no attainment of cessation in the lower stages. It is extensively discussed as in that record.
