On [the text reading]: "[From the] preliminary practice of the two absorptions ... it is named solely 'knowledge of another's mind'": This is the answer. Although these two absorptions take the cessation of mind and mental factors in general as their own nature, their being called merely 'the ideationless absorption' and 'the absorption of the cessation of sensation and ideation' is based on establishing the name from the preliminary practice. The non-Buddhists and others hypothesize that suffering and pleasure constitute saṃsāra, and in order to escape them they cultivate the ideationless absorption. Thinking that the desire realm has suffering, and the first, second, and third dhyānas have sensations of joy and pleasure, but failing to understand the equanimity and the remaining minds and mental factors of the fourth dhyāna, they say: "Although in the fourth dhyāna one has escaped suffering and pleasure, ideation still remains; nirvāṇa has not yet been attained, and I must now extinguish it." Therefore, in the preliminary practice they are biased toward loathing ideation, and it is named 'the ideationless absorption'. At the time of the preliminary practice for the absorption of the cessation of sensation and ideation, one is likewise biased toward loathing sensation and ideation: that is to say, noble beings, weary of sensation in the two realms and of ideation in the dhyānas, loathe these sensations and ideations in the formless absorptions and wish to temporarily bring them to rest; hence in the preliminary practice they are biased toward loathing sensation and ideation. Therefore, both of these absorptions have their names established from their preliminary practice. Just as the knowledge of another's mind also knows sensation and the like, but because in the preliminary practice one only wishes to know another's mind, its name is established from the preliminary practice; the two absorptions are also like this.
