"The treatise says, up to: 'are produced by the remaining three causes'": this explains the opening verse. All conditioned [dharmas] are fourfold in general, and within each of the four kinds there are two varieties: 1. associated dharmas; 2. non-associated dharmas. Among associated [dharmas], defiled dharmas are produced by the remaining five causes excluding the maturation cause, because dharmas produced by the maturation cause are not defiled. Second, dharmas born of maturation are produced by the remaining five causes excluding the omnipresent cause (sarvatraga-hetu), because dharmas produced by the omnipresent cause are exclusively defiled. Third, the remaining dharmas are produced by the remaining four causes excluding both the maturation and omnipresent causes, because the remaining dharmas are not of the nature of maturation and are not defiled. Initial undefiled dharmas are produced by the remaining three causes excluding the aforementioned two causes—maturation and omnipresent—as well as the homogeneous cause (sabhāga-hetu), because initial undefiled [dharmas] are not maturation, are not defiled, and have no previously arisen homogeneous dharmas.
