On "Moreover, within one body [...] causal, empowering, and so forth": the ten stages refer to the five inside the womb: first, kalala; second, arbuda; third, peśī; fourth, ghana; fifth, praśākhā; and the five outside the womb: first, infancy; second, childhood; third, youth; fourth, prime of life; fifth, old age. In the ten stages of the present body, later ones all exclude earlier ones. But relative to the homogeneous ten stages of other future bodies, each and every one serves as a cause for the ten stages. In the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 18, many masters explain the homogeneous cause of the ten stages, which cannot be elaborated in full. This treatise adopts the non-definitive doctrine of one master. Therefore, the critical arbiter of the Mahāvibhāṣā says: "Critical judgment: one should state it thus. Each and every one of the ten stages of another body serves as a homogeneous cause for the ten stages of another body and the ten stages of this body. Each and every one of the ten stages of this body serves as a homogeneous cause for the ten stages of this body and the ten stages of another body. This is because phenomena already arisen in a later stage also serve as homogeneous causes for unarisen phenomena in an earlier stage." Another explanation: this treatise also agrees with the critical arbiter of the Mahāvibhāṣā. The ten stages of the present body in this treatise are stated on the basis of actual arising; hence a later stage is not the cause of an earlier stage. But relative to the homogeneous ten stages of other future bodies, each and every one serves as a cause for the ten stages. In the case of the critical arbiter of the Mahāvibhāṣā, the ten stages of the present body are stated comprehensively in terms of both arising and non-arising; hence the ten stages of this body with respect to the ten stages of this body can also serve as homogeneous causes and so forth. One should know that the ten stages are spoken of only with respect to the same plane and the same destiny. Therefore, the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 131, says: "Question: In the same destiny and same plane, with differences of location, are they mutually causes or not? Some say there is no cause. This is not logical, for there would be great elements that are momentary, meaning that the great elements belonging to the Five Pure Abodes have never arisen from beginningless saṃsāra."
