Question: According to the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 131, in the same destiny and the same plane, a left eye serves as a homogeneous cause for a left eye; the right eye, as well as the nourished and the matured, each considered within its own category, serves as a homogeneous cause. This Kośa and other treatises say that the kalala and so forth each can serve as a homogeneous cause for the ten stages; that means it also serves as a cause for non-similar phenomena. For instance, the kalala has only the body sense-faculty and the great elements; how can it serve as a homogeneous cause for the four sense-faculties, such as the eye, in the stage of the six sense-bases? The explanation says: the statement that each and every one serves as a homogeneous cause for the ten stages is made on the basis of the general characteristic, not meaning that each and every one serves universally as a cause. Just as the four sense-faculties such as the eye in the stage of the six sense-bases take earlier eyes and so forth as homogeneous causes. Question: If the eye and so forth serve as causes within their own category in the same destiny, should wholesome and unwholesome [actions] in the five destinies also serve as causes only for their own destiny? The explanation says: wholesome and unwholesome [karmas] have strong force and can serve as causes for different destinies in the same plane. Following this principle, external barley, rice, and so forth within their respective kinds should be extensively analyzed. If the Dārṣṭāntikas do not accept that material phenomena serve as homogeneous causes for material phenomena, their tenet contradicts what is stated in the root treatise. Therefore, the root treatise says: past great elements, with respect to future great elements, are causal, empowering, and so forth. 'Causal' refers to the causal condition, which is the homogeneous cause, not the other four causes. 'Empowering' refers to the empowering condition. By this it is clearly known that visible matter serves as a homogeneous cause with respect to material phenomena.
