Regarding the passage: "If so, how is it that... the Avīci hell?": Those who deny the intermediate state cite a sūtra to raise an objection. If there is an intermediate state, why does the sūtra state that one falls headlong in one's present body into the Avīci hell? Māra is called Dūṣī. Dūṣī here means "destroyer." Māra here means "killer." Hence, Mahāvibhāṣā 125 states: "When the Buddha Krakucchanda scolded Dūṣī Māra, that Māra immediately sank into hell. It is told that this Buddha took an attendant named Vidhura to enter a brāhmaṇa village on sequential alms-round. At that time, Dūṣī Māra transformed into a young boy and threw a stone from afar to hit him. The attendant's head was fractured and blood covered his face as he walked behind the Buddha. The Buddha turned to the right like an elephant king looking back, saw this event, and scolded the Māra, saying: 'How could you commit such an evil deed beyond your station?' At that moment the Māra's karma was exhausted, and he fell into hell." The explanation says: Śākyamuni Buddha's Māra-king was named Pāpīyān, while Krakucchanda Buddha's Māra-king was named Dūṣī.
