[On the] Śāstra's [words], "If so, how is it that... Avīci hell?": The Mahāsāṃghika and others cite a sūtra to prove there is no intermediate existence (antarābhava). There are three sūtras in all, and this is the first sūtra. If there were an intermediate existence, why would the sūtra state that one falls directly in one's present body into the Avīci hell? "Dūṣī" translates as "ruiner". "Māra" translates as "killer". The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 125, states: "The Buddha Krakucchanda, taking an attendant named Vidura, entered a Brahmin village to beg for food in succession. At that time, the Māra Dūṣī manifested as a youth, threw a stone from afar and struck him; the attendant's head was broken and blood covered his face as he walked behind the Buddha. The Buddha then scolded Māra, saying: 'How could you commit such an evil karma beyond your measure?' At that moment, Māra's karma was exhausted, and he immediately plunged into hell."
