「謂諸惡處至故非識住」者，答。中有二，此即初解。三惡趣中苦受損識，第四、有頂有滅識法，故非識住。

"Namely, in the evil destinies […] therefore are not abodes of consciousness": the reply. There are two explanations within this; this is the first explanation. In the three evil destinies, painful feeling impairs consciousness; in the fourth [dhyāna] and the Peak of Existence (*bhavāgra*), there are dharmas that extinguish consciousness; therefore they are not abodes of consciousness.
