"In order to obtain various... this stage is called grasping": growing older, in order to obtain various superior and wonderful objects, one runs about pursuing everywhere without begrudging toil and fatigue, yet is not yet able to produce good and bad karma for future existence; all the five aggregates in this intervening stage are collectively called 'grasping'. In this stage grasping is predominant, so it is distinctively designated by this name. Therefore, Mahāvibhāṣā 23 quotes the Prajñaptipāda-śāstra as saying: "What is grasping? Due to the three cravings, one pursues in the four directions; although encountering many perils, one does not begrudge toil and fatigue, yet has not produced good and bad karma for future existence: this is the stage of grasping (end of treatise text)." As for the distinction between craving and grasping: when first arising, it is called craving; when continuous and blazing, it is established with the name of grasping. Therefore Nyāyānusāra 28 says: "How are the two links of craving and grasping separately established? The Vaibhāṣikas maintain that craving at the first moment is expressed by the term 'craving'; this very [craving] continuing, expanding, and blazing is established with the name of 'grasping', because its continuous grasping of objects becomes firmer and more intense." Another explanation: "grasping" means clinging and holding, which is the four types of grasping. Therefore Nyāyānusāra 26 says: "Running about pursuing everywhere to obtain various desirable objects: this stage is called grasping. Grasping has four types, namely, the grasping of desire, of views, of precepts and vows, and of doctrines of self, due to the distinctions in grasping. Because of being able to grasp, it is called grasping." The explanation says: as for the link of grasping, it actually encompasses all four types of grasping. But saying that the increase of craving is called grasping is said in contrast to the preceding craving.
