「然上所言至為遣他愚惑」者，論主牒難，復釋經意。世尊為除有情三際愚惑，略說十二三世因果，投機說法如前已辨，理則圓滿。非此經中為欲顯示老死有果、無明有因。若以理而言，前則無窮，生死無始故；後則可盡，得道便無故。

Regarding "However, what was stated above [...] in order to dispel others' delusions": the author of the treatise repeats the objection and further explains the intent of the sūtra. In order to remove sentient beings' delusions regarding the three periods of time, the World-Honoured One briefly expounded the twelve [links as] causes and effects across the three periods of time; teaching the Dharma according with the capacities of listeners has already been distinguished before, and the principle is complete. It is not that within this sūtra he wished to show that old age and death have fruits, or that ignorance has a cause. If spoken of in terms of reason, going backwards there is infinite regress, because saṃsāra is beginningless; going forwards it can be exhausted, because upon attaining the path it no longer exists.
