The treatise says: "Other masters say... the twenty-first," stating a divergent view. This master's intention is: the single color of space (ākāśaika-varṇa) is neither brightness nor darkness, so this form is established separately, making twenty-one. According to the correct view of the Vibhāṣā, the single color of space is simply a part of the form of the space element (ākāśa-dhātu-rūpa); the form of the space element is simply brightness, darkness, and such colors, with no separate substantial entity. However, brightness, darkness, and so forth are established as differentiations of the four colors of blue and so forth. Therefore the eleventh fascicle of the Vijñānakāya states: "The single color of space is like blue, yellow, and so forth, because it is established from the differentiations of blue and so forth. Or it is a differentiated form resembling blue and so forth, not identical with blue and so forth"; therefore it says "like".
