[The text of the] Treatise states: "As the World-Honoured One said: [...] afflicted and destroyed like being struck by an arrow," which is the second [section], citing a textual attestation. Deterioration means precisely being liable to affliction and destruction. It cites a verse from the *Arthavargīya* by Dharmatrāta as attestation, as can be known. Fascicle 34 of the *Vibhāṣā* states: "The Bodhisattva Śākya spoke this verse for King Bahuprapañca (Duoxiu/Duoqiu), who craved overseas kingdoms." It is extensively as explained there. Fascicle 97 of the *Vibhāṣā* states: "Question: What difference is there between alteration and destruction? Answer: Alteration demonstrates subtle impermanence. Destruction demonstrates gross impermanence. [There are] many explanations of this kind." Question: In this passage, does the explanation of deterioration as the definition of matter (rūpa) agree with the *Vibhāṣā*'s explanation of alteration and destruction? Answer: It does not agree. Here, alteration is itself destruction, just as when one speaks of alterability and resistance, resistance is itself alteration; there cannot be resistance without alteration, nor alteration without resistance.
