[The text of the] Treatise states: "This objection is incorrect [...] the meaning of alterability and resistance is established," which is the explanation. The bases and cognitive objects of the five consciousnesses must all be aggregates; therefore, there is no presently existing single, isolated atom. Because they are always aggregated, they have alterability and resistance. However, the second fascicle of the *Nyāyānusāra* offers two explanations: one explanation is identical to this treatise text. Another explanation states: Some say that there are also single, isolated atoms, yet they possess alterability and resistance without giving rise to consciousness. Because the bases and cognitive objects of the five consciousnesses must be aggregates—just as when positing that although an atom lacks spatial parts and lacks tactile contact, it is conceded that an atom has resistance, has opposition, and has an obstructive function. One should know that the meaning of alterability and resistance is also like this.
