The treatise says: "Mind and mental factors... the meaning of their functions." This is the second, explaining the meaning of base (*āyatana*). The old translation called them 'entrances' (*ru*), but the meaning was not exhaustive. The meaning of cessation is the meaning of entrance, but it is only their cessation and does not capture the meaning of arising. In reality, the twelve bases serve as the place where mind and mental factors arise and grow, and also serve as the place where they cease and vanish. Now, calling them 'bases' (*chu*) encompasses both of these meanings. "The etymological explanation is that what can generate and grow mind and mental factors is called a base": this adduces one meaning as the etymological explanation. "It is able to generate and grow their functions": mind and mental factors already have intrinsic nature; the twelve bases cause them to operate in the world and grasp results, which is called their function.
