論「教誡學徒故稱為論」，釋論名也。教謂教授，令修擇法　誡謂誡勗，令滅煩惱。此是對法功能，故舉此釋論。故下文云「若離擇法定無餘，能滅諸惑勝方便。」故稱為論，結論名也。即是問答分別教誡學徒之義，名之為論。

The Śāstra states: "'Teaching and admonishing disciples is therefore called a treatise (*śāstra*)'" explains the name of the treatise. "Teaching" refers to instruction, causing them to cultivate the discernment of dharmas (dharmapravicaya); "admonishing" refers to admonition, causing them to eliminate the defilements. These are functions of the Abhidharma; hence they are cited to explain "treatise." Thus the text below states: "If one is separated from the discernment of dharmas, there is definitively no other superior means capable of extinguishing all afflictions." Therefore it is called a treatise, concluding the explanation of the name "treatise." That is to say, the meaning of questioning, answering, distinguishing, teaching, and admonishing disciples is called a treatise (*śāstra*).
