論「其論者何」已下，第二明發起序。舉論名體，發起本頌一切法故。文中有四：一出昔論名體、二釋今論名、三明說論意、四明先說人。此半頌，第一出昔論名體。文中有三：初頌前問起、次舉頌答、後長行釋。此文初也。

From the Śāstra's "What is that treatise?" onward is the second [major section], clarifying the introductory narrative of initiation. It raises the name and essence of the treatise to initiate [the explanation of] all dharmas in the root verses. In the text there are four [parts]: first, presenting the name and essence of the earlier treatise; second, explaining the name of the present treatise; third, clarifying the intention in expounding the treatise; fourth, clarifying the former expositors. This half-verse is the first: presenting the name and essence of the earlier treatise. In the text there are three [parts]: first, raising the question before the verse; second, citing the verse in reply; third, the prose explanation. This passage is the first.
