[On the Śāstra's statement:] 'Some say joy and so forth [up to] frequently range over them', this sets forth an alternative explanation. This means that because joy and so forth serve as proximate conditions for the mind, causing the mind to frequently range over objects, they are called mental investigations. Fascicle 149 of the *Vibhāṣā* contains three interpretations. Two interpretations are identical to this Śāstra's; the third interpretation states: 'Moreover, because they rely on the mind to range proximately toward objects, they are called mental investigations.' It also states: 'Being swift and sharp regarding objects, delighting in frequently conceptualizing them, they are therefore called investigations.' The *Nyāyānusāra* says: 'Joy and so forth possess power to act as proximate conditions, causing the mind to frequently range over objects. If one were to say that joy and so forth take the mind as their proximate condition and frequently range over objects, and are therefore called mental investigations, then ideation (saṃjñā) and so forth should also receive this name, since they are associated with the mind and range by means of the mind.'
