[On the Śāstra's statement:] 'There is in terms of the mental continuum, but not in terms of the cognitive object', this is the answer. In terms of persons there are differences: persons differ in their favorable and adverse reactions toward objects, giving rise to joy toward this and not grief, and so forth; but in terms of the cognitive object, it extends to all three. Fascicle 49 of the *Vibhāṣā* says: 'Question: Is there any visible matter or the like that determinately accords with joy, up to determinately according with equanimity? Answer: Relying on the cognitive object, there is not; relying on the mental continuum, there is. That is to say, there is visible matter or the like that is sometimes agreeable and sometimes disagreeable; or agreeable to that person, disagreeable to this person, and neither agreeable nor disagreeable to another. Some say: visible matter and the like accord with joy toward friendly parties, accord with grief toward hostile parties, and accord with equanimity toward neutral parties.' The *Nyāyānusāra* says: 'Rebirth-linking and death are solely investigations of equanimity, not grief or joy, because equanimity is acquired spontaneously and accords with those states (accords with death). Only investigations of equanimity with mixed objects can genuinely bring about detachment, because mental investigations are solely with outflows (if they extended to the outflow-free, then there would be the application of mindfulness to mental phenomena with an unmixed object directed toward cessation which severs defilements), only equanimity and not others (because the uninterrupted path with outflows and the first eight liberations are in the threshold dhyāna). In the preparatory paths there are also investigations of joy, but they are not comprised in uninterrupted [paths], liberations, or root absorptions. In the final path of liberation, investigations of joy are possible (those who enter the root absorption have mental investigations of joy).'
