The Śāstra says: "Solid food such as this ... because of being born into higher realms." This text is the second [part], distinguishing the realm to which it is bound. The Nyāyānusāra says: "It is not that the bodies of higher realms abide dependent on external conditions. Although the form realm has primary elements that can nourish, they are not solid food, just as they are not exquisite desires. Just as in the form realm, although there are subtle and exquisite objects of visible form, sound, and touch, they do not induce intense greed, and hence are not called exquisite desires. Likewise, although there is supreme, exquisite touch that gathers and nourishes, there is definitively no swallowing by morsels; therefore, it is not solid food. Although it is not included in solid food, it is not without the meaning of food. For instance, although joy is not included among the four foods, the sūtras call it food because it has the meaning of food. As a sūtra says: 'I feed on the food of joy; by the food of joy I abide for a long time, like the Gods of Utmost Radiance (Ābhāsvara).' If that is so, then in the desire realm, too, only what is swallowed by mouthfuls in morsels should be called solid food. Not so. In the desire realm, swallowing is the entry door, and the rest can be designated by this name in accordance with it. It is not the case that there is a small amount of swallowing in the form realm such that other touch could be named after it; therefore, there is no error of false analogy between the two realms. If a person is born in Uttarakuru, could their lifespan be severed without swallowing morsels? Although it is not severed, the form and complexion of their physical basis would become exhausted and impaired, making it hard to survive. If so, why do they abide by food? Odor and so forth serve as food; swallowing is not necessary. They constantly inhale wish-fulfilling exquisite odors, or touch pleasant, gentle winds and other exquisite tangibles. Moreover, within their bodies there is nourishing warmth. Or perhaps it is not that all in the desire realm are sustained by solid food, nor that solid food is definitively restricted to the desire realm; this statement was made based on the predominant and primary. One should not object on the basis of what is present below and absent above."
