The treatise says: "Although there are sense faculties and objects [...] it would become useless." This refutes the opponent's defense. The Sautrāntika defends by saying: When faculties and objects give rise to consciousness, they are called the coming together of the three; when they do not give rise to consciousness, they are called the six faculties and six objects. Refuting them: Although there are faculties and objects that do not give rise to consciousness, so that apart from the coming together of the three one may speak separately of faculties and objects, whenever consciousness arises, it necessarily relies on faculties and objects. If consciousness arises, that is already the coming together of the three; how then could one, apart from the coming together of the three, further speak of six contacts?
