"The Śāstra says ... established in terms of the cognitive object": this explains the two kinds of contact. The name 'contact with resistance' is established in terms of its support, because its supporting faculties possess resistance. The name 'predominant verbal contact' is established in terms of the cognitive object: among cognitive objects, differing from the five consciousnesses which do not solely grasp semantic content, mental consciousness additionally grasps verbal designations; thus it is called 'predominant verbal'. 'Predominant verbal' refers to verbal designation. The five [consciousnesses] do not grasp verbal designations, but the mental [consciousness] additionally grasps verbal designations; hence it is called having an 'extensive object'; this derives its name from the extensive object that is cognized. Cognizing that something is blue means cognizing the designation 'blue'—namely, mental consciousness cognizing both designations and referents universally.
