11.54

論「有說有情至故說為增」，述異釋也。前以苦重增上故名增，後釋以數受苦故名增。評其論意，只是兩釋，不是三解。有人謂是三解，誤也。《正理論》云「此十六中受苦增劇過本地獄，故說為增。或於此中受種種苦，苦具多類，故說為增。」

The commentary says: "Some say sentient beings... therefore they are called additional"—this relates an alternative explanation. The former explanation designated them "additional" because the suffering is intense and multiplied; the latter explanation designated them "additional" because they repeatedly undergo suffering. Evaluating the intention of the treatise, these are simply two explanations, not three interpretations. Someone asserted that there are three interpretations, which is mistaken. The Nyāyānusāra says: "Among these sixteen, the suffering undergone is more severe, exceeding the primary hell, hence they are called additional. Or, within these, they undergo various kinds of suffering and the instruments of suffering are of many kinds, hence they are called additional."
