On "The Śāstra says... Buddhas appear": Explaining the time of a Buddha's appearance: during the gradual decrease from eighty thousand years, with no fixed time. That is, from eighty thousand years downward, decreasing by half a year and so forth, an appearance in the world is always possible, down to one hundred years; below one hundred years, there is no possibility of a Buddha's appearance. According to the Bhadrakalpika-sūtra, fascicle 10, it says: "Krakucchanda Buddha appeared in the world when human lifespan was forty thousand years; Kanakamuni Buddha appeared in the world when human lifespan was thirty thousand years; Kāśyapa Buddha appeared in the world when human lifespan was twenty thousand years; Śākyamuni Buddha appeared in the world when human lifespan was one hundred years." According to the Xiyu ji, fascicle 6, it says: "At sixty thousand, forty thousand, twenty thousand, and one hundred years, Buddhas appear in the world." Furthermore, according to the Lokasthāna-sūtra, fascicle 9, it says: "In the twenty small kalpas of the world's arising and formation, of those that have abided, how many have passed and how many have not passed? Eight small kalpas have passed, eleven small kalpas are in the future, and the ninth kalpa is currently not yet finished." According to this scriptural passage, right now precisely corresponds to the ninth kalpa; that is, the four Buddhas of the Bhadrakalpa who have appeared in the world are all within the gradually decreasing period of this ninth kalpa. This should be further examined in detail. According to this text, then within the preceding eight kalpas no Buddha appeared in the world, and Maitreya Buddha will appear precisely in the tenth kalpa. Furthermore, according to the Maitreya-sūtra [fascicle] 8, the "kalpa" mentioned is the kalpa of weapons; the sūtra says: "Within the kalpa of weapons, down to being born here today." Furthermore, according to this text, afterwards there are only eleven kalpas remaining, yet nine hundred and ninety-six more Buddhas are to appear; the time is feared to be far too pressed. Examining the Bhadrakalpa, it seems to be a wind kalpa, and among the sixty-four kalpas, this is the first kalpa. Taking sixty-four kalpas as one Bhadrakalpa, within which a thousand Buddhas [appear], would for the moment be plausible in principle. This should be further examined in detail.
