12.79

論「由本事中至不應修苦行」，引此文證是凡夫。聖人改斷戒取，不應修苦行。既修苦行，證是異生。

On the Śāstra's text, "From the avadāna (or itivṛttaka)... should not cultivate austerities": Citing this text to prove that they are ordinary persons. A noble person (ārya) has eliminated attachment to rules and rituals (śīlavrataparāmarśa) and should not cultivate austerities. Since they cultivated austerities, it proves they were ordinary persons (pṛthagjana).
