The commentary states: "What is wholesome by intrinsic nature ... like good medicine." This explains the second, wholesome by intrinsic nature (svabhāva-kuśala). Shamelessness and non-dread have two meanings: first, they are solely unwholesome; second, they pervade unwholesome minds. The three unwholesome roots possess five meanings: first, they apply to all five categories [of abandonment]; second, they pervade the six consciousnesses; third, they are of the nature of anusayas; fourth, when severing the wholesome roots, they act with firm effort; fifth, they can initiate coarse and wicked bodily and vocal actions. Because these five are unwholesome by intrinsic nature, their operational power is strong; like other mental factors, they become unwholesome through association with these. Wholesomeness is the reverse of this, hence called wholesome by intrinsic nature. Since wholesome by intrinsic nature is compared to good medicine, it does not depend on anything else to establish its wholesome nature.
