On the Śāstra's phrase: "Because no sūtra says ... up to ... words of relinquishing life:" The Sautrāntika answers how it violates the sūtras. In the Mahānāma-sūtra, it does not say that by declaring oneself to be an upāsaka and so forth, the five precepts are immediately generated; for this Mahānāma-sūtra does not speak of the words "From this day forth, as long as life lasts, I relinquish life [rather than break them]." How could one take another sūtra that does not explain the characteristics of an upāsaka to explain an upāsaka?
