On the passage in the treatise from "One who takes refuge in the Dharma" up to "hence one generally takes refuge [in all of them]": this clarifies taking refuge in the Dharma. The text of this treatise represents the view of the Vibhāṣā. Fascicle Thirty-four states: "Question: Does one who takes refuge in the Dharma take refuge in the cessation of the aggregates belonging to one's own continuum? Does he take refuge in the cessation of the aggregates belonging to other continuums? Or does he take refuge in the cessation of the aggregates belonging to insentient things? If so, what fault would there be? If one takes refuge only in the cessation of the aggregates belonging to one's own continuum, how is that not a partial taking of refuge? If one also takes refuge in the cessation of the aggregates belonging to other continuums and so forth, why does one merely say, 'I take refuge in the Dharma,' and not say 'all'? Furthermore, how can it be said that the meaning of 'taking refuge' is the meaning of 'shelter and protection'? For the cessation of the aggregates belonging to other continuums and so forth provides no shelter or protection to oneself. Answer: It should be stated thus: one takes refuge in the cessation of all aggregates belonging to one's own continuum, to others' continuums, and to insentient things. Question: Since the cessation of the aggregates belonging to other continuums and so forth provides no shelter or protection to oneself, how can one take refuge [in it]? Answer: Although it does not have the meaning of shelter and protection toward oneself, it does have the meaning of shelter and protection toward others. Because the characteristics of shelter and protection are equivalent, one also takes refuge [in it]; this is explained in terms of acquisition (prāpti). If explained in terms of intrinsic nature, it is because there are as many [cessations] as there are defiled dharmas. There is no difference in the cessation obtained by oneself or by others; because I obtain disjunction among all defiled aggregates, all cessations have the meaning of shelter and protection toward me."
